Post 16

Luccombe offer a two-year Post 16 programme, over four days.   Learners continue to focus on Maths and English qualifications in GCSE or Functional Skills, as well as their own subjects of interest, continuing to be therapeutic and learner led.  We offer a range of other GCSEs and awards in subjects such as Art, Science and Digital Skills.  Alongside these we continue to be a therapeutic setting working with each learner at their pace, through different opportunities, life skills and working towards independence and preparing them for adulthood.

The Employability Programme is endorsed by NCFE and has been created by Luccombe, tailored for SEN learners to achieve over the two years. The programme is award based, offering Bronze, Silver, Gold; this is assessed on the course work and two projects one in the first year and a second towards the end of the final year. We will follow the Five Star Charter looking at these areas:  Knowledge, Skills, Application and Presentations as part of our assessment.

Throughout the programme we visit employers, work with professionals and attend career fairs to explore different pathways suitable for the learners including internships and apprenticeships. The Post 16 learners work as a group with year 12 and 13’s together building on resilience, collaboration and communications following a set of compulsory topics. All sessions are person centred; we work with the learners’ interests building the programme around the topics and meeting the needs of the learners.

We will work towards supported work experience in many industries; this could be in group sessions or as visits to places of work to ask questions about the job roles and learning about a range of employments available for their future pathways, learning about how to converse with employers and colleagues. These may be volunteering roles or virtual work experience; we explore all areas available.

The bedrock of the programme is the development of the theme ‘Life story’ throughout the two years of the programme building their story; this becomes their CV. This will link with the questions asked when speaking to professionals that we visit in their workplace and/or come in to meet our learners at Luccombe, discussing their own life experiences which have formed their CV (story). We work towards building confidence to talk through their CV and aid them in interview scenarios, giving them the skills and  tools to follow their aspirations for the future, whether that be college, apprenticeship or places of work.

In Post 16 we promote independence offering a dedicated Post 16 area with, common room for the learners to spend time together, use of the kitchen and allocated self-study time.
