Forest School

What is Forest School?
Forest School originated in Denmark over 70 years ago and enables a long-term, sustained emersion in a natural woodland environment. It takes a holistic, child-led approach to learning, which involves a level of supported risk and is facilitated by qualified and experienced leaders.
What are the benefits of Forest School?
The regular nature of Forest School means that learners experience all weathers and changing seasons first-hand by being immersed in nature throughout the year. Their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional needs are met through being able to learn in a relaxing environment at their own pace and ability and by using their preferred learning styles. The experienced staff undergo continuous personal development to ensure that they are fully equipped to keep learners safe, whilst scaffolding their learning. Learners will gain a deep understanding of the environment and how to respect and care for it, whilst gaining increased levels of creativity, confidence, resilience, and independence.
What does Forest School look like at Luccombe Hub?
At Luccombe, we have access to large woodland areas on the edge of the site, and learners spend an afternoon there each week during summer months. During timetabled sessions, young people will learn how to use tools safely, how to make a fire outdoors, learn outdoor cooking skills, observe the flora and fauna throughout the seasons on regular walks and learn how to use natural materials, such as leaves, sticks, conkers, acorns, fruits for many different crafts and science projects. If you would like to know more about Forest School, you can visit the Forest School Association website here Forest School Association | What is Forest School? | Forest Schools | Nature Premium
