Equine Assisted Learning

Equine Assisted Learning at Luccombe Hub: A Unique Therapeutic Approach for Our Learners

At Luccombe Hub, we are proud to offer Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) a powerful, hands-on program that uses horses to support the emotional and social development of our learners. Delivered by qualified instructors certified under the EAQ framework, EAL is an innovative therapeutic approach tailored especially for young people with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), trauma histories, and insecure attachment experiences.

What is Equine Assisted Learning?

Unlike traditional classroom learning, EAL involves students engaging directly with horses through activities such as leading, grooming, and navigating obstacle courses always on the ground and always guided by experienced facilitators. These interactions help students develop vital life skills like communication, emotional regulation, self-confidence, and teamwork.

Because horses are highly sensitive to human body language and emotions, they provide honest, non-verbal feedback. This “mirroring” effect encourages learners to become more aware of their own feelings and behaviours, fostering self-understanding in a safe and supportive environment.

Why Horses?

Horses are prey animals with acute senses, reacting instantly to subtle cues from their handlers. This makes them uniquely suited to helping learners with sensory processing differences, such as those experienced by individuals with ASD. Their calm, non-judgmental nature also offers a safe space for young people affected by trauma and insecure attachments to practice trust and build relationships at their own pace.

Supporting Our Learners’ Unique Needs

For students with ADHD, EAL promotes focus, patience, and impulse control. The structured horse activities require learners to be clear, consistent, and calm, skills that translate directly to everyday life and learning.

For those with ASD, the predictable and non-verbal communication style of horses helps improve social skills and reduce anxiety. Many students find that working with horses provides a comforting sensory experience that encourages emotional expression.

Learners with histories of trauma and insecure attachments often face difficulties forming trusting relationships. Through consistent, compassionate interactions with horses, learners can experience safety, respect, and emotional connection, supporting their healing and personal growth.

A Core Part of Learning at Luccombe Hub

At Luccombe Hub, EAL is more than just an activity, it is a core part of our therapeutic support. Our EAQ-qualified instructors carefully design sessions to meet each learner’s individual needs, helping them to develop resilience, confidence, and new coping strategies.

The skills and insights gained during EAL sessions empower our students to thrive both inside and outside the classroom, contributing to their overall well-being and success.
